Walk-in FAQ
The questions we hear most.
How big does a room need to be for a walk-in?
About 5 by 5 feet is the minimum we'll design around. Anything smaller usually makes more sense as a reach-in with deeper shelving. If you can stand inside it and turn around, we can work with it.
Can you add an island to my existing closet?
Yes, if the room is at least 7 feet wide. Islands need roughly 30 inches of clear floor on every side so drawers can open. We'll usually sketch it with and without one so you can see the tradeoff in hanging space.
What's the difference between a walk-in and a reach-in system?
A reach-in works in a standard bedroom closet footprint, usually 5 to 8 feet wide, with double-hang and shoe shelves. A walk-in is a room you step into, with space for drawers, an island, seating, and a wraparound layout. We'll recommend whichever one actually fits your space during the consultation.
Do walk-ins increase home resale value?
Appraisers don't usually give a line item for built-in closets, but realtors consistently tell us they shorten time on market. A well-designed walk-in photographs well and signals the rest of the house has been cared for.
What if my walk-in has an odd shape or slanted ceiling?
That's most of the houses in Mid-Missouri. We build to whatever the room actually is. Angled ceilings, beams, half-walls, soffits, dormers. Every panel is cut for that specific closet.
