What to Expect: The LB Classic Closets Design Process from Start to Finish

Wondering what it's like to work with a custom closet company? Here's our design process from first contact to finished installation. No surprises.

Custom closet design and installation process

If you've never worked with a custom closet company before, the whole process can feel like a mystery. You know you want a better closet, but you're not sure what happens between "I'm interested" and "wow, my closet looks amazing." Does someone come to your house? Do you need blueprints? How long does it take? Is there a hard sell involved?

Fair questions. And honestly, the lack of transparency in this industry is one of the reasons people put off getting their closets fixed for years. They don't know what to expect, so they don't start.

Let's fix that. Here's exactly how the process works when you work with LB Classic Closets, from first contact to finished project. No mystery, no fine print, no surprises.

Step 1: You Reach Out

Everything starts when you contact us. That might be through our website form, a phone call, or submitting your measurements through our online tool at measure.lbclassicclosets.com.

If you use the website contact form, you'll tell us a bit about your project: what space you're thinking about, how many rooms, and what's bugging you about your current setup. We'll get back to you quickly to set up a consultation.

If you go straight to the measurement form, even better. You'll submit your room dimensions, photos, and any notes about what you're looking for. That gives us a head start so we can hit the ground running when we talk.

Either way, there's no commitment at this point. You're just raising your hand and saying "I'm interested."

Step 2: Measurements

If you haven't already submitted measurements, this is where we get them. And here's where we do things a little differently than some companies.

We start with a virtual approach. You can measure your closet yourself (it's not as hard as you think, and we have a full guide on our blog to walk you through it), submit the numbers and photos online, and we work from there. Most people can measure a closet in 15 to 20 minutes with a tape measure and their phone.

Why virtual first? A few reasons. It's faster for you because there's no scheduling a home visit and waiting around for someone to show up. It's more comfortable because you're not having a stranger walk through your bedroom. And honestly, with good measurements and photos, we can design just as accurately as if we were standing in your closet.

If your project is complex or you'd rather not measure yourself, we can always arrange to come out. But most of our clients find the self-measure option quick and easy.

Step 3: Virtual Design Consultation

This is where the fun starts. We schedule a video call (or phone call, whatever you prefer) to talk through your project.

Here's what happens on that call. We look at your measurements and photos together. Then we start asking questions. Not invasive questions, practical ones. How many shoes do you own? Do you fold or hang your jeans? Do you have seasonal clothes that need to rotate? How many belts and ties? Is there anything about your morning routine that drives you crazy?

This isn't small talk. These answers directly shape the design. If you hang everything, we maximize hanging space. If you have 30 pairs of shoes, we build dedicated shoe storage. If you share the closet with a partner, we design zones so everyone has their own territory.

We also talk about your aesthetic preferences. Do you want a clean, modern look? Something warmer and more traditional? Do you have a color or finish in mind? We'll show you options and help you figure out what fits your home.

The consultation usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes. By the end, we have a clear picture of what you need and what you're hoping for.

Step 4: Custom Design

After the consultation, we go to work. We use ClosetPro, which is professional closet design software, to create a detailed layout of your space. This isn't a rough sketch on a napkin. It's a proper design showing exactly where every shelf, rod, drawer, and accessory goes. You'll see dimensions, configurations, and how the finished product looks in your space.

We send the design to you for review. Want to move that shelf up six inches? Done. Want to add a drawer where we had open shelving? No problem. Want to swap out the shoe rack for more hanging? We adjust. This is a collaborative process, and we don't finalize anything until you're happy with the design.

Most designs go through one or two rounds of revision. Some are right the first time. Either way, you're not paying for changes at this stage. The design work is part of the process.

Step 5: Proposal and Pricing

Once the design is finalized, we put together your proposal. This is a clear, detailed breakdown of what you're getting and what it costs. Materials, hardware, accessories, and professional installation are all included in one number.

We don't play pricing games. There's no "base price" that magically doubles once you add the stuff you actually need. The proposal reflects the design you approved, built with the materials and finishes you chose.

You'll have time to review the proposal and ask questions. If you want to scale something back to adjust the budget, we can show you what that looks like. If you want to add something, same deal. This is your project, and we want you to feel good about the investment before we move forward.

Step 6: Scheduling and Material Ordering

Once you approve the proposal and we get started, we order your materials and schedule the installation. Lead times depend on the materials and the complexity of the project, but we'll give you a clear timeline.

We communicate throughout this phase. You'll know when materials are ordered, when they arrive, and when installation is scheduled. No ghosting, no wondering what's happening.

Step 7: Professional Installation

Installation day is when everything comes together. Our team arrives, sets up, and builds your closet. Here's what to expect.

We protect your home. Drop cloths, shoe covers, whatever it takes to make sure your bedroom and hallways stay clean. We're working in your personal space and we treat it with respect.

We remove the old system. If you've got existing wire shelving, rods, or hardware that's being replaced, we take it out and dispose of it. You don't need to deal with that.

We install everything. Shelves, rods, drawers, hardware, accessories. Everything gets mounted, leveled, and tested. Drawers slide smoothly. Shelves are secure. Rods are straight and solid.

We clean up. When we're done, we clean the space. No sawdust, no packaging, no mess left behind for you to deal with.

We walk you through it. Before we leave, we show you everything. How the drawers work, how to adjust shelf heights if you ever want to, where everything is. We make sure you're comfortable with your new closet before we call it done.

Installation typically takes 1 to 3 days depending on the size of the system. We'll give you a realistic estimate upfront.

Step 8: Enjoy Your Closet (and Call Us if You Need Anything)

That's it. Your closet is done. You start using it, and here's what most people tell us: the first morning getting dressed in a well-designed closet feels like a completely different experience. Everything is visible. Everything has a home. You're not fighting with your space anymore.

And if anything comes up down the road, we're here. A shelf needs adjusting? A drawer pull needs tightening? You want to add something you didn't think of originally? Call us. We stand behind our work, and we're not disappearing after the install.

The Timeline: How Long Does All This Take?

From first contact to finished closet, the typical timeline looks like this:

Consultation and design: 1 to 2 weeks. This includes submitting measurements, the virtual consultation, and design revisions.

Proposal review: A few days to a week, depending on how quickly you're ready to move forward.

Material ordering and scheduling: 1 to 3 weeks depending on materials and our installation calendar.

Installation: Half a day to a full day for most projects.

So all in, you're looking at roughly 3 to 6 weeks from "I'm interested" to "my closet is done." Some projects move faster. More complex projects take a bit longer. But you'll always know where things stand.

Ready to Start?

Now you know exactly what to expect. No surprises, no hidden steps, no pressure. Just a clear process that gets you from "my closet is a mess" to "I actually love my closet."

Head to measure.lbclassicclosets.com and submit your measurements, or just give us a call. We'll set up your free virtual design consultation and get the process moving.

We've been doing this since 1987. We know how to make it easy.
